What is involved with sedation dentistry?

At Lighthouse Dental, we offer oral sedation to assist in ensuring pain-free dental treatments.

Oral sedation involves the use of liquid medicines and pills, such as diazepam, lorazepam, and triazolam. This type of dental sedation is known as conscious sedation, because the patient would still be awake, aware, and able to communicate with the dentist while feeling more sleepy and numb than usual.

Nitrite oxide wears off in a few minutes after the last inhale, while oral sedation usually takes 1-2 hours or longer to completely wear off.

Find out if oral sedation is a good option for you on your next visit by scheduling a consultation.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

u

Do I need sedation dentistry?

If you check any of the boxes on the list below, it’s a good idea to talk to our oral sedation dentist about your needs.

  • Anxiety or acute stress during dentist appointments
  • Fear of shots or needles
  • Decreased sensitivity to local anesthesia
  • Having an overly sensitive gag reflex
  • Feelings of claustrophobia while in the dentist chair
  • Having painful or sensitive teeth
  • History of a traumatic dental experience
  • Inability to handle the noises or smells of dentistry
  • Need of a complex or time-consuming treatment
u

What does a dental sedation feel like?

Oral sedation dentistry is sometimes called “twilight sleep” because it puts the patient into a state of short-term amnesia (forgetfulness) where they are insensitive to pain while maintaining full consciousness.
u

How should I prepare for a dental sedation?

In most cases, try to not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your dental appointment. Unless specified by our oral sedation dentists, continue to take all routine medications without interruption. For your safety, it is required that a friend or family member bring you and take you home from the appointment.

While our oral sedation specialist will debrief you on everything you need to know about sedation dentistry once you’ve arrived, it’s a good idea to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the treatment in case the sedation hasn’t fully worn off by that time.

u

Are there risks to having an oral dental sedation?

Sedation dentistry is typically safe, especially when they’re administered by our team of licensed healthcare providers. However, oral dental sedation may come with some short-term risks, which include:

  • Lingering drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches

Allergic reactions to oral sedation medications are rare, and there are other drugs to counteract those issues.

Our oral sedation specialists will do everything to ensure that the medications are tailored to the needs of each patient, thus preventing any medical complications.
